Volunteerism at GRM: The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act
As it is written in the chronicles of Gospel Rescue Ministries, since 1906 men, women, churches, businesses, and the community at large have extended a helping hand, a heart of giving back, a commitment to service and dedication to the call of service evangelism. Our volunteer program was inaugurated for the purpose of aiding in all of GRM’s ministry and program efforts, and to promote the spiritual wellness and addiction treatment of our clients. Volunteers have played an integral role in GRM’s mission to serve the homeless and those living with an addiction.
The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (H.R. 1388)
In 2009, President Barack Obama called on Congress to create new services and volunteer opportunities for Americans that would help build stronger neighborhoods and a stronger country. Congress answered the call with The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. By creating more than 175,000 new service opportunities nationwide and rewarding those who volunteer, a new era of service has been created to build a stronger nation for everyone.
Objective of the Serve America Act:
- Creates 175,000 New Service Opportunities and Rewards Americans for Commitment
- Creates New Service Corps to Meet Key Needs in Low-Income Communities
- Provides Incentives for Middle and High School Students to Engage in Service
- Makes High School Students Part of Solution to Challenges in their Communities
- Expands Service Opportunities for Older Americans and Public-Private Partnerships
- Encourages Highly Skilled Professionals to Help Improve Global Health
- Recognizes and Supports Colleges and Universities Engaged in Service
The Gospel Rescue Ministries Volunteer Fellowship Corps firmly believes in the objects and goals of the Serve America Act. Through the V.F.C ., volunteers will be able to help strengthen their national communities and contribute to expanding national and local community initiatives.
